CAI BOXUAN (蔡柏轩)
Cultural Project Manager & Curator
boosentsai@gmail.com
Cai Boxuan (Boosen) is a cultural practitioner and practice-based researcher working across curatorial practice, cultural research, and cross-regional exchange. His work examines how cultural identities are constructed, negotiated, and transformed in contemporary societies, particularly within Southeast Asia and the broader monsoon region.
He is the director of MonsoonFish magazine, founder of Aotuqie Cultural & Creative Co., and initiator of the Escape Arts Group, as well as a member of Heritage Asia-Pacific. Through exhibitions, publications, and field-based research, he develops projects that engage with cultural continuity, fragmentation, and the social conditions shaping identity in a rapidly changing world.
His practice is informed by approaches drawn from cultural studies and anthropology, with a focus on tracing cultural flows shaped by migration, maritime routes, and diasporic networks. He is primarily active across China, Singapore, and Indonesia, with projects and research conducted in cities including Chaozhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Penang, and Singapore. He engages with local contexts while building connections between different cultural environments, approaching culture not as fixed heritage but as an evolving process shaped by movement, negotiation, and social interaction.
He has led and contributed to over 70 cultural initiatives across the region, collaborating with communities, institutions, and independent platforms. His work has been featured in international media and continues to develop through the intersection of practice and research.
At the core of his work is an interest in how misunderstanding, fragmentation, and social distance shape contemporary cultural dynamics. He is particularly interested in how early cross-cultural engagement and collaboration among younger generations can reshape perceptions and open up possibilities for dialogue. His long-term aim is to develop interdisciplinary frameworks that connect cultural practice with broader social, historical, and policy contexts.
